Description

A large oil on canvas by renowned local artist Terry Harrison. The painting shows a farmer hooking a pair of shire horses up to an old fashioned one man plough in the corner of a large field, near to a moss covered barn and a small copse of trees. The detail in this beautiful painting is remarkable and is evocative of a simpler way of life. The canvas is framed in a plain gilded wooden frame which measures 87 x 61 cm (34″ x 24″), with the painting itself measuring 75 x 50 cm (29.5″ x 19.5″).

Terry Harrison British 1951 – 2017. Terry Harrison was born in Norfolk, but in 1965 his family moved to Farnborough in Hampshire and at school in nearby Farnham Terry was mentored by an outstanding art teacher who instilled in the young man a confidence in his own abilities that was to prove to be the making of a great artist. By 1984 he decided to give up his day job as an illustrator with Yellow Pages and become a full time artist…a decision that was to pay of in spades. Terry became one of the most popular artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He embraced modern technology and used all social media opportunities to assist and educate aspiring artists by passing on his tricks of the trade. He also developed his own art publishing company and range of artists materials. He passed away from terminal cancer in June of 2017 and will be sorely missed by his legions of fans and followers.

The following is an extract from a newspaper article on this painting….

A Local Hero and inspiration to thousands.

My painting of the week this week is a stunningly beautiful oil on canvas of bygone times, a farmer strapping two Shire Horses into a small hand plough in a large field next to a moss-covered barn by the late local artist Terry Harrison. Terry Harrison is a name that will be known to hundreds, if not thousands of budding local artists as well as many, many others all around the country. Terry was an inspiration to lots of people picking up their brushes for the first time as well as those more seasoned artists, who needed fresh inspiration.

Born in 1951 in Norfolk, it very quickly became apparent that he had an artistic talent, but that was not encouraged in his early education. He and his family moved to Farnborough in 1965. Terry was encouraged massively by his new art teacher, indeed by the age of 15 he had passed both his O-level and A-Level Art. He went on to study at Farnham Art School and worked in graphics or illustrating for most of his career, all the while painting in his spare time. By 1984 the demand for Terry’s artwork had become so great that he couldn’t keep up on a part-time basis, so the job had to go. He never looked back.

By 1989 he had set up his own fine art print publishing company. He was one of the first artists of his generation to truly embrace modern media and used it to his advantage. He wrote over 25 “How to” type art books, some selling 100’s of thousands of copies, many self-help art videos and DVDs, he even developed his own range of paintbrushes and paints, predominantly to make the budding artist’s life a little easier. He became one of the most respected practical art teachers of a generation, constantly giving his time to local art societies and clubs as well as doing demonstrations and running workshops all over the world to up and coming artists and respectful amateurs alike.

Sadly, last year, Terry was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away in June 2017. He was a true inspiration, especially to members of The Wokingham Art Society and their like around the country, who would have experienced Terry’s workshops first hand. Thankfully his legacy lives on through his art as well as his many books and DVDs. He was a lovely man and a great artist and will be missed by all who knew him.
